Company Profile

Welcome to 2011

Year 2011 sees Royal Furniture celebrating their 21st Anniversary and their reputation for quality and excellence is as strong as ever.

Owners Roydon Bonney and Alister McKenzie have come a long way since their humble beginnings in an upstairs factory in St Asaph Street. They began their business selling customwood lacquered bedroom furniture such as desks and bookcases direct to the public. In 1992 the company moved to Moorhouse Avenue then in 2005 they moved to a purpose built factory in Woolston.

Alistair and Roydon have always kept a watchful eye on market trends and in 1995 a range of rimu bar stools, bedroom furniture, hutch dressers, coffee tables and entertainment units were added to their range. But by 1998 when they knew that rimu supplies were being significantly reduced, they made an executive decision to concentrate on an acknowledged renewable resource, that of plantation-grown pine.

As the company progressed, they began to supply the wholesale market and continued to develop this avenue alongside the retail and manufacturing arms of the business.

After two years of huge success at selling to the wholesale market throughout New Zealand, it was decided to close the retail side of the business and further invest in more technology. With this they set up their own panel laminating department, purchased a heated laminating press, a seven-head planers and a twin-head CNC routers.

Through this investment in technology, they were able to increase their ability to achieve better designs and improve delivery times, furthermore increasing the turnover by up to 120% per annum for the next two years.

The year 2004 saw the building of their new 3,640 square metre purpose-built factory, and the purchase of more machinery, they now have two seven-head planers and three twin-head CNC routers which has enabled them to further increase production.  As for the immediate future, the focus is on middle to top end quality bedroom furniture, slat beds, entertaiment units and coffee tables.
